UI Design

Overview

In a six-week project, I created a new online publication. The goal was to design a website for publishing art that featured an engaging reading experience and simple and appealing visuals, with the overall goal of generating an interest in art.

Typeface choice for logo

Trajan is a serif typeface designed in 1989 by Carol Twombly for Adobe. Its design is based on the letter forms of Roman square capitals, like those used for the inscription at the base of Trajan’s Column. I chose this look to set the right tone for the site – a tone that was solid and grounded in history.

Creating artsy look

I researched historic art images to find the right style for the site, one that would set a tone based on art. This included touches of ancient paintings, carvings, inscriptions, vases, and even carpets.

Buta: Wood handstamp for textile printing traditional "paisley" designs, Iran

Taijitu: "The Great Monad" from Edna Kenton's Book of Earths (1928).

Scroll: 2nd century Greco-Roman vine scroll, South Arabia

Fleur-de-lis: Fleur-de-lis on 14th century Syrian albarello.

Gul: Konya 18th carpet with Memling gul design.

Triquetra: Triquetra on one of the Funbo Runestones (11th century).

Chintz: Chintz fragment with tulips and insects, India, ca.1700-30.

Six-petal rosette: Cantabrian stele at the Monastery of Iranzu, Navarre
